April 23, 2013 - URISA’s GIS Management InstituteSM requests comments from qualified GIS management professionals on the latest version of the URISA GIS Capability Maturity Model (GCMM).
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, through its GIS Management InstituteSM, is a leading organization for the professional management of GIS operations. The GIS Capability Maturity Model is intended primarily to define the components of an effective GIS operation, as well as to identify the characteristics of a well-managed and mature GIS. The GIS Capability Maturity Model is intended to serve both as a stand-alone document, as well as a central component of the GIS Management Institute.
The GIS Capability Maturity Model was originally developed in 2009 and adopted as a URISA initiative in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 it was used to inform development of the Geospatial Management Competency Model by URISA. URISA’s GIS Management Institute conducted an internal review/revision process from October 2012 through March 2013. This process resulted in the version of the model now offered for public review:
URISA GIS Capability Maturity Model for Public Review (23 page pdf file)
After the public review period, URISA’s GIS Management Institute will review all comments received, make appropriate changes, and publish a fully authorized peer-reviewed version of the model.
Although comments are welcome from all GIS professionals and other interested reviewers, comments from geospatial managers are most highly sought.
For your comments to be considered in this process, we ask that you identify yourself by name with your professional qualifications. Please rest assured that your name will only be known by URISA Executive Director Wendy Nelson and GIS Management Institute Committee Chair Greg Babinski. While we may utilize individual comments, they will not be identified by any name.
Please note that the model is related to the URISA Geospatial Management Competency Model (GMCM), which it cross-references, so it will be useful to also familiarize yourself with the GMCM: http://www.urisa.org/gmcm.
The call for public comments period commences on April 23, 2013 and will close on May 31, 2013.
After reading and carefully studying the draft GIS Capability Maturity Model and background information, please complete this questionnaire to provide your comments (note that it will likely take at least 15-20 minutes to thoughtfully participate and respond to the questionnaire):
