2012 URISA Advocacy Agenda

This is the URISA 2012 Advocacy Agenda. The Chapter Roll Call at GIS-Pro 2011 (Indianapolis, Indiana) provided the basis for the four primary components. In the Roll Call, each attending Chapter was asked to state their members’ three most important issues. There were 21 issues related to Agenda item #1, six issues related to item #2, six issues related to item #3, and three issues related to item #4.  The actions supporting each primary Agenda item were agreed upon by the URISA Board of Directors.  

1. Executive Support & Sustainable Funding for Geospatial Programs - Briefing Paper

a. Develop, promote, implement URISA’s ROI model
b. Promote/enhance the geospatial community
c. Encourage development of geospatial auditing

2. Nationwide Development of High Quality, Publicly Accessible Geospatial Data - Briefing Paper

a. Develop, implement Geospatial Capability Maturity Assessment
b. Coordinate advocacy with NSGIC and others on For the Nation data initiatives
c. Support the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO) Data Sharing Initiative

3. Affordable Geospatial Training Programs Offered by Academic Institutions and Other Organizations

a. Support GeoTech Center and others in developing affordable geospatial training
b. Identify and promote open educational resources initiatives internationally
c. Promote more federal financial aid opportunities for part-time & non-traditional students
d. Continue developing web-based curricula of URISA workshops and webinars
e. Create web collaborations to extend reach of geospatial education beyond URISA

4. Highly Capable Geospatial Workforce to Meet Current and Future Demands - Briefing Paper

a. Support implementation of Geospatial Technology Competency Model
b. Promote use/understanding of the Geospatial Body of Knowledge
c. Develop Tier 9 of the Geospatial Technology Competency Model
