Message to the Membership

Over the last sixteen years of my URISA membership, the organization has come to mean many things to me.

URISA means professional growth, as I feel that my participation in conferences, committees and chapter functions better prepared me to recognize challenges as opportunities for improvement. URISA has been and continues to be a great source of inspiration to me in my work as a GIS/Mapping Coordinator, mainly due to the GIS educational offerings and the industry information that streams from the association on a regular basis.

Most importantly, URISA provides the chance to interact with other GIS professionals. URISA members are smart, hard-working, generous with their experiences, and they enjoy what they do. The camaraderie I find with GIS professionals I meet through URISA has enriched my professional life immensely.

As URISA President-elect, I would bring experience, action and commitment to the position. I have served in several capacities as a URISA leader, from Chapter President of LAURISA to Secretary for the URISA Board of Directors. I have the experience to know that it takes time and energy to get URISA activities planned and to bring them to fruition. I know that a strong commitment to the mission of URISA, to the directives of the Board of Directors, and to improving services to the membership is required in order to lead this association successfully.

The spatial data industry continues to change rapidly. URISA members must be prepared and positioned to take full advantage of these changes as GIS use matures and becomes more mainstream. I believe that URISA can assist its members in adapting to these changes by providing current tools and information to support them in their work. If elected, I would listen to the membership for their ideas on what URISA can offer to them in their professional development and GIS education.

To keep URISA strong and relevant, I would continue collaborative efforts with associations whose interests are related to GIS use. I would also work to expand URISA’s presence by continuing outreach efforts to international GIS users via specialty conferences, presentations by international speakers, and focusing on what GIS professionals in other parts of the world are accomplishing.

My goal is a strong and vibrant URISA. Thank you for your consideration and your interest.
