CalGIS 2012 Call for Abstracts

April 11-13, 2012

Sacramento, California

Sheraton Sacramento

An Invitation to Participate in CalGIS 2012!

The CalGIS Conference is the one opportunity we have during the year to focus our attention on California-based GIS activities, regardless of software used, user industry, or other program constraint. It brings together a wide range of GIS practitioners who are intent on sharing experiences, learning new skills, and networking among their peers.

Consider participating as a presenter at CalGIS next year. Share your research, success stories, ideas and technical know-how! The conference review committee will build the program around the abstracts submitted through this Call for Abstracts. You are encouraged to submit an abstract to the program committee for consideration.

As part of the conference, U.C. Kearney Ag Center announces its 7th Biennial “Geospatial Technologies in Agriculture and Natural Resources Symposium” to be held as part of the 2012 CalGIS Conference.

Program Tracks

Several topical areas have been suggested, but the intent of this conference is to address topics and issues that are important to you. You can ensure that it is of relevance to your work by submitting an abstract or discussion topic. If your interest is in policy issues, submit a discussion topic. If you are concerned with development of the GIS profession submit an abstract. While the conference is intended to be both informative and educational, your interest and participation is required. The following are general categories. Many presentations will fit into more than one category. When submitting your abstract, please select the category that best fits your presentation.

Although the deadline to submit abstracts has passed, late submissions will be considered. You may email late abstract submissions to Pat Francis.

  • Education, Health, and Community - The focus of this track is on serving geospatial information needs and the application of GIS within the community, and the areas of education and health.

  • Natural Resources, Water, and Agriculture Technical Applications - This track covers the application of geospatial technologies in the broad areas of natural resources, water, and agriculture.

  • Risk and Emergency Management - This track covers the application of geospatial technologies in the broad areas of risk management, mitigation, and planning or responding to emergency situations.

  • Technical Applications - This track includes presentations on specific applications of geospatial technology. This track includes the use of emerging technologies, web applications, and open source applications.

  • Government and Policy - This track is focused on laws, regulations, policies, and standards which affect the geospatial community. It is intended to include presentations or discussions on how the geospatial community can effectively respond to requirements that affect our work.

  • General Geospatial - This is an open track for presentations and discussions on geospatial topics of interest to the geospatial community.

Presentation Format

When submitting your abstract, please select the format which you feel is best suited for your presentation. Note that the committee may ask you to consider a different format depending on program needs.

  • Individual Presentation - Each presenter is allotted 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions. Presentations of this type will be scheduled with two other presentations to form a cohesive session of 90 minutes in length.
  • Complete Session - Comprised of one subject covered by one or more presenters. This format will be particularly considered for the technology track and the expectation is that the depth and complexity of the issue merits the longer time. A complete session is 90 minutes in length.
  • Lightning Talks - Short (5 minute) talks on a single subject. Concise and focused with few slides.
  • Panel & Roundtable - A panel or roundtable is a 90 minute presentation which encourages interaction and discussion between the panelists and the audience. Panel presentations should include at least three panelists all speaking on aspects of a particular topic.
  • Poster Presentation - Those accepted for presentation within the poster session will prepare posters for display within the exhibition and will be asked to be prepared to discuss their presentations informally with conference attendees during assigned times during the conference.

Proceedings and Speaker Registration

Presenters whose proposals are accepted are expected to submit papers for publication in the Conference Proceedings. If PowerPoint or slide presentations are submitted for inclusion in the Proceedings, a narrative description must accompany them. The final version of your presentation is due on the day it is presented to attendees at the conference. It can be provided on CD Rom or by thumb drive transfer on site at the conference.

All accepted presenters must register and pay the standard conference registration fee.
