Call for Papers: URISA Journal Special Issue on Geospatial Education and Training

The URISA Journal—the geospatial field’s premier open-access, peer-reviewed publication—invites original manuscripts reporting innovative research and development projects related to higher education in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIS&T – a.k.a. “geospatial”).

The special issue will include both full-length (~ 5,000 word) peer-reviewed articles and shorter (~ 500 word) desk-reviewed reports. It will be a sequel to the original 2003 URISA Journal “UCGIS special issue” (http://www.urisa.org/files/vol15no1.pdf). In contrast to the 2003 edition, the 2010 issue will highlight issues of concern to two-year higher education institutions–which serve nearly half of U.S. undergraduate students. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Curriculum design issues, including competency models and DACUM occupation analyses
  • Educational requirements for professional certification and licensure
  • GIS as general education
  • Articulation agreements that enable students to transfer credits between two-year and four-year institutions
  • History of geospatial education in two-year institutions
  • International and cross-cultural issues
  • Online and blended learning

Authors interested in contributing to the special issue should send a 200-word preliminary abstract to interim editor David DiBiase at dibiase@psu.edu and should plan to deliver manuscripts according to the following timeline:

  • June 1, 2010: Abstracts to editor
  • June 15, 2010: Notification of acceptance status
  • August 1, 2010: Complete manuscripts to editor
  • August 2010: Manuscript review period
  • September 15, 2010: Reviews and manuscript revision requests to authors
  • October 15, 2010: Revised manuscripts to editor
  • November 1, 2010: Final manuscripts delivered to URISA headquarters for technical proofreading and formatting
  • December 1, 2010: Publication
