Breakout Sessions

10:30 AM – 12:00 Noon

One Government
Data Development Consortia: Data Development for Less than a King’s Ransom
Scare financial resources encourage innovative thinking, often leading to partnerships that might not have worked too well in the past. How do you resolve accuracy issues at a variety of local government scales? How do you develop a funding mechanism that is fair to all parties involved? What are issues regarding data aggregation or disaggregation? When the financial and technological incentives are structured in such a way as to get local, regional, state, and federal governments - along with the private sector - to work together to develop data cooperatively, great things can happen. Presentations in this session will focus on these often disparate entities working together to build quality data that is beneficial to all.

Immersive GIS
GIS and Emergency Services
This session focuses on how innovative technologies such as the CLOUD can be used with GIS in many different areas of emergency preparedness, response and mitigation. Learn about how these technologies can be used to determine appropriate locations of emergency operations centers, enable disaster relief and situational awareness.

  • The Heart Beacon
Steven McGee, Simple Wins Concepts LLC, Oceanport, NJ
  • Disaster Preparedness and Response
Scott Sherwood and Alex Hepp, Pictometry International Corp., Rochester, NY

Roadmaps for GIS Professionals
Advancing your GIS Career Online
Career advancement and education go hand in hand and the proliferation of online education opportunities are now more readily available to GIS professionals than ever before.  Come to this panel session to hear from educational institutes and the GISCI about opportunities for continuing education (certificates, Masters and GISP programs) and career advancement.

The Business Benefits of GIS
Enhancing Investment Efficacy with GIS
For most geospatial professionals, the value of GIS is obvious. The time and money invested in GIS has the ability to lessen the time spent in the field and provide answers quickly. However, annual budgets are shrinking, and often the business case for continually funding GIS programs must be made. Three presentations discuss the ROI on GIS projects from across the country.

Lab

Building Your Own Tile Set From OpenStreetMap
Ever need to use your own symbology on top of OpenStreetMap? This lab covers the details of defining your own symbology styles and using them to build your own tile set from OpenStreetMap.

 Working Group Meeting
Geospatial Management Competency Model Task Force

In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (DOLETA), URISA plans to create and publish a Geospatial Management Competency Model (GMCM). The GMCM will specify the core competencies required for success by geospatial professionals whose work roles involve supervisory and managerial responsibilities. The GMCM will correspond with the “Management Competencies” tier of DOLETA’s Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM), and with DOLETA’s approval will be linked to the GTCM at DOLETA’s Competency Model Clearinghouse.

Agenda items for Work Session 1 include organizers’ welcome and participant introductions, an overview of the project’s background and goals, and an introduction to a discussion draft of the GMCM, followed Task Force members’ comments.Participants in the GMCM work sessions at GIS-Pro 2011 will include an invited Task Force of senior specialists in geospatial business administration, project management, and strategic planning. All other GIS-Pro 2011 attendees are welcome to participate as observers.

Co-organizers and facilitators:

  • David DiBiase, GISP, Esri, Redlands, CA
  • Greg Babinski, GISP, King County GIS Center, Seattle, WA
  • Patrick Kennelly, Ph.D., CW Post Campus of Long Island University, Brookvale, NY

One Government
Collaboration Best Practices
The best laid plans of coordinators and technologists are at the heart of a true one government approach. The New Jersey statewide GIS strategic plan, the Chicago GoTo2040 comprehensive regional plan, and the Indiana design of a web-based Geo-Synchronization Service are excellent examples of best practices that are leading to the institutional, formalized connections between government silos.

Lightning Talks - Geospatial Data That You Never Knew Existed
This session is a series of ignite presentations discussing and demonstrating unexpected, strange, and unusual data and sources - and cool ways to put them to use.

One Government
Risk Assessment and Response:  A Unified Government Approach
When communities are required to respond or plan for emergencies, how can a multi-government approach be coordinated? Attend this session for a Federal, local, and private sector perspective.

Immersive GIS
Back to the Future: Advancing Geospatial Technology
This session highlights the benefits of Web-based technology integration with Enterprise GIS data to support mobile and real-time decision making.  The presentations will showcase the transition from traditional uses of GIS to innovative approaches, which benefit future development, field workers and the public.

ESIG SHOWCASE SESSION
Find out why these systems have been recognized as Exemplary Systems in Government!

The Business Benefits of GIS
Communicating Benefits of GIS to Elected Officials
Even the best GIS projects and programs need justification and promotion to the revolving door of elected officials and decision-makers. But what are the most effective methods of organizing and presenting the benefits of your GIS without wasting your limited audience time with those who control the future of your GIS? This session features a moderated panel of experienced GIS leaders who will share their expertise and knowledge of communicating GIS benefits to decision-makers.

Using 3D to Assess Change
Since completion of Cochiti Dam in 1975, sediment has been steadily accumulating within Cochiti Reservoir and upstream within the Rio Grande channel. This presentation will show how technology was used to visualize and assess the changes over the years. Examples from different dates of photography, DTM, and bathymetry will be displayed in 3D with special projection equipment (3D glasses will also be provided to session attendees). A brief description of methodology, data compilation and analysis will be given.

Insights from the 2010 Decennial Census and Beyond
Since December 2010, the US Census Bureau has been tabulating and releasing data from the 2010 decennial census and will continue to do so through 2013 as new statistical geographic entities are defined and more detailed tabulations of the data are completed.  Demographic data are available for over 11 million legal and statistical entities.  In addition to releases of new data products, Census Bureau experts have analyzed and reported on demographic patterns and trends.   Census Bureau experts will discuss population trends, how urban areas are delineated, and data, products, and the release schedule for them.  If you use census data, you can’t afford to miss this session!
