About Providence

With a thriving arts community, vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, a renowned restaurant scene (Providence was voted #1 for food by Travel + Leisure readers!) and so many things to do, Providence is the perfect place to visit. The city's compact size and convenient location make it easy to get to and hard to forget.

Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island and was one of the first cities established in the United States. Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, Rhode Island was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. Providence is home to a number of institutions of higher learning including Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

During the summer months, the city hosts WaterFire, an environmental art installation that consists of about 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence.
