ROI of 3D Geospatial Information for Urban Planning

Robert Lega
Sanborn Map
Colorado Springs, CO

This paper will present a brief overview of 3D geospatial information frameworks and a quantification of the return on investment (ROI) for urban planners. Specifically, 3D geospatial data applications in the areas of urban design, transportation infrastructure planning, right of way, siting, permitting, and telecommunication planning will be described with examples. Among the examples will be as-built models derived from laser ranging, LiDAR derived transportation corridor models, 3D spatial proximity analysis, and the application of aerial sensors to urban issues such as green energy technology initiatives.

The paper will address the real value of geospatial 3D technology in each of these areas and present a method of quantifying the ROI in actual dollar amounts. A model will be presented that will utilize a linear programming approach to calculating the ROI in dollars. Finally, the paper will summarize the budgetary benefit to urban planners in today’s economic climate.
