Hoosier Hospitality: The Many Ways of Accessing Spatial Data Through the Indiana Spatial Data Portal

The Indiana Spatial Data Portal (ISDP), an IndianaMap asset, provides several ways of viewing and downloading Indiana spatial data. Through a unique partnership with the State of Indiana, Indiana localities, the Indiana Geographic Information Council, Federal Agencies, and Indiana University, the ISDP provides access to over 20 terabytes of geospatial information.

Primarily serving raster datasets, the ISDP provides public access to Indiana spatial data as one of its primary missions. To maximize potential use by the various sectors, the ISDP has multiple methods of viewing, downloading, and online access to GIS services. This presentation will briefly discuss the architecture of the ISDP and the numerous ways to consume the vast amount of data contained within. Among the topics will be the single file download page, the multiple-file download desktop application, the online viewer, using services within desktop GIS and remote sensing applications such as ESRI and ERDAS products, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web coverage services (WCS) format, and using the services in web and mobile applications.

The ISDP received the Indiana Geographic Information Council’s 2010 Excellence in GIS Award for the higher educational sector for adding new web mapping services. The presentation will highlight some of the websites and mobile applications that use these newly offered public services.
