Indiana NHD Data Maintenance - Keeping Data Current Through Geo-synchronization

Phil Worrall, GISP
Indiana Geographic Information Council
Indianapolis, IN

Efficiently maintaining high/local-resolution geospatial information that is widely disseminated and utilized at local- to state-scales, like that of the National Hydrography Dataset, is a challenge: USGS must maintain a national coverage with updates from multiple stewards. The challenge is strengthened in that highly distributed data consumers, most with a unique spatial domain, must keep their NHD holdings updated. Through a 2010 FGDC CAP grant The Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC) and the State of Indiana GIO, with help from Image Matters, LLC designed and built a Geo-Synchronization Service and Web Console to address these challenges through standards-based services and Web 2.0 technologies.

Phil Worrall, GISP is the Executive Director, Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC).  IGIC is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a 30-member board of directors and general membership of over 300 GIS professionals.  As Executive Director, Phil leads IGIC's efforts in the statewide coordination of Indiana GIS through dissemination of data and data products, education and outreach, adoption of standards, building partnerships, and the IndianaMap.  Phil has over 35 years of private industry experience working in the mapping sciences.
