Mapping the Marshall, Michigan Oil Spill

Carmen Maso, GISP
USEPA
Chicago, IL

In July 2010, a 30 inch oil pipeline ruptured near Marshall, Michigan releasing approximately 800,000 gallons into a culvert leading to Talmadge Creek. Talmadge creek leads to the Kalamazoo River. USEPA was the lead agency for this emergency response. GIS support was recognized as a critical part of the response and was requested on the first day.

This presentation provides an overview on the GIS activities in response to the Marshall Oil Spill. It will highlight USEPA’s responsibility and how USEPA GIS staff worked with the responsible party and other federal, state, and local agencies to support this emergency response
