Challenges of Small Area Analysis

Combining data on demographics and environmental conditions for geographic units poses many methodological challenges.  These papers consider how we can meet the difficulties associated with the analysis of geographic disparities in such health issues as cancer and children’s health through a careful use of small area data.

  • Spatial and Temporal Measurement Issues in the Block-Level Analysis of Cancer
Francis Boscoe, New York State Department of Health, Albany, NY

  • Validating Area-Level Consumer Profiles for Health Research
Ann Klassen, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD

  • Geographic Data and Geocoding Public Health Surveillance Data Best Practices
Stephanie Foster, Andrew Dent, Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA

Health GIS and the Urban Environment
People of all ages must navigate a complex urban space.  These papers focus on strategies for assessing needs and overcoming barriers that affect the quality of life of both older and younger citizens.

  • Volunteered Geographic Information: Mapping Barriers and Safe Routes to School
Chris Seeger, Iowa State University, Ames, IA

  • An Approach for Live Data Exchanges Between ESRI ArcGIS & MS Access
Hua Zheng, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA

  • Using Remotely Sensed Data and GIS Tools to Characterize Living Environments for Evaluation with Blood Pressure Data
Mohammad Al-Hamdan, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL

Environmental Public Health Tracking Network and Standards

The Environmental Public Health Tracking Network integrates hazard monitoring, exposure, and health effects surveillance. Papers in this session provide an introduction to the network and to network standards.

  • The Environmental Public Health Tracking Network
Alex Charleston, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA

  • Metadata Standards in Environmental Public Health Tracking
Gonza Namulanda, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA

  • Developing Geo-Visualization Standards for Measures Reported in the NEPHTN
Ambarish Vaidyanathan and  Nicholas Jones, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA

10:30am - 12:00pm
Breakout Sessions

Statistical Modeling
Data complexity and biases in data are frequent challenges when analyzing spatial variation of factors related to health.  In this session, novel statistical solutions are provided to help overcome those difficulties and provide meaningful information for better decision-making.
  • Geostatistical Mapping of Late Stage Breast Cancer Incidence
Pierre Goovaerts, BioMedware, Ann Arbor, MI

  • Mapping Anthrax Cases from Promed - What Can We Learn about Epidemiology from Open Source Archival Sources? A Focus on Central Asia
AiLam Truong, and Jason Blackburn, SEER Lab, California State University, Fullerton, CA

The Food Environment
Food consumption is an important factor affecting the health of populations. These papers investigate various aspects of food availability in the retail and workplace environments.

  • Spatial Dynamics of the Retail Food Store Environment
Imelda Moise, University of Illinois, Champaign, IL

  • Fresh Produce Availability & Health Outcomes in Champaign County, Illinois
Keely Delcore and Marilyn Ruiz, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL

  • Assessing Impact of Workplace Food Environments on Workers’ Consumption Patterns
Christopher Seeger and Joyce Mbugua, Iowa State University, Ames, IA

Environmental Public Health Tracking Network Enterprise Architecture
This session reviews how the Environmental Public Health Tracking Network applies concepts from the discipline of Enterprise Architecture to ensure that the Network fulfills its mission.

  • Environmental Public Health Tracking Network Enterprise Architecture
Ray Buckner, BearingPoint Inc, Atlanta, GA
  • Developing a Public and Friendly Environmental Public Health Tracking Network
Alex Charleston, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA
  • Environmental Public Health Tracking with Birth Defects in Florida
Russell S. Kirby, PhD, MS, FACE and Jean Paul Tanner, MPH, University of South Florida

Lunch on own and exhibit time.

1:30pm - 3:00pm
General Session

Geographic Visualization and Analysis for Public Health
Presented by Pennsylvania State University

This session will explore the importance of geographic issues for common public health data analysis tasks. We will describe how advanced geographic visualization tools can be applied toward common public health data analysis tasks, and look forward to where research in geographic visualization and analysis are headed. Emphasis will be on the advantages of integrating interactive map-based data query, exploration, and presentation tools with spatial statistical and computational methods.

  • Alan MacEachren, Frank Hardisty, and Jin Chen, GeoVISTA Center, Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University

A hands on workshop will follow this general session at 3:30pm for those who wish to learn more. Space is limited to 15 people and having your own laptop is required.

3:30pm - 5:00pm
Breakout Sessions

Public Health Epidemiology
Epidemiology has long been associated with geospatial and temporal factors. This session will inform participants on several relevant investigations.

  • A Spatial-Temporal Model of Plague Transmission in California Ground Squirrels
Ashley Holt, University of California Berkeley, San Francisco, CA

  • Space-Time Cluster Analysis of American Cutaneous Leishmaniosis in Venezuela
Eva-Mary Rodriguez, University of Central Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela
  • Analyzing Risk Factors for Blastomycosis in Urban Areas
Melissa Lemke, Center for Urban Population Health, Milwaukee, WI

Obesity and the Environment

Obesity is recognized as a major health problem in developed countries. This session includes papers that address place-based factors influencing physical activity.

  • Obesity, Energy Expenditure & The Building Environment
Jeffrey Sledge, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI

  • Does the Built Environment's Walkability Help Determine Health?
Sarah Rodgers, Swansea University, Swansea, United Kingdom

  • Accessibility Audit Using Public Participatory Geographic Information System (PPGIS) in West Windsor Township, NJ
Wansoo Im , Vertices LLC, New Brunswick, NJ

Use Your Own Data with GeoViz Toolkit

GeoVISTA researchers will help participants load their own public health data into the GeoViz toolkit on their personal laptops so that they can explore and analyze those data. We will help you understand how the components in the GeoViz Toolkit can quickly assembled into custom applications that augment your current analysis strategies. This will be a highly interactive session with substantial opportunity for you to obtain answers to questions about the tools and their application.

Frank Hardisty, Alan MacEachren, Jin Chen, GeoVISTA Center, Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University

(This is a Hands on Workshop that follows the General Session at 1:30pm. Pre-registration is required and space is limited)
