URISA Listserv Policy

One of the objectives of URISA is to “foster communications among IT/GIS management professionals in provincial/state and local government.”  In so doing, the intent is to “develop relationships of trust, respect and teamwork between members.”  To accomplish this objective, URISA uses several communications channels, including email lists, newsletters, webinars, a professional journal, a website, and a presence in social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter and Linked-In).

The URISA Board of Directors supports the use of an email listserv to collect and disseminate information that is relevant and timely for our members.  The listserv is used currently to disseminate a newsletter and periodic information about educational opportunities.  In the past, the use of our listserv has been solely administered by URISA staff, and content has been professional and appropriate. It is anticipated that the membership will be able to use the email listserv going forward.  This policy formalizes URISA’s expectations and practices surrounding its email communication medium.

Postings to the URISA listserv should:
  • Be clear and concise;
  • Support the goals and policies of our organization; and
  • Be professional, courteous, and relevant to our membership.

Members who post questions to the listserv are asked to summarize results and post them to the list for other list members.  Members should refrain from using the ‘Reply to All’ function when responding to the original question.

The URISA Board of Directors does not condone the use of its communications media and email lists for the advancement of private enterprise, where the value of the URISA listserv and its members are leveraged for non-URISA benefit.  If the use of our listserv is abused by any member or member organization, their access to the listserv may be restricted or revoked.

With that understanding the Board of Directors approves the following uses of the email listserv:

  1. All URISA-related business as determined by the staff, Officers and Directors;
  2. Voluntary on-line survey requests that are directed toward URISA and its primary public sector constituents of "states, provinces, commonwealths, territories, protectorates, tribal affiliations, regional, county, and municipal governments, and similarly recognized civil jurisdictions;”
  3. Job announcements and recruitment of potential employees for organizations represented by the membership;
  4. Requests by members to obtain focused and timely information from their peers to assist their own efforts; and
  5. The distribution of news and educational materials that is relevant to the geospatial community.

The URISA Board of Directors feels that more appropriate resources exist in other venues to advertise geospatial career opportunities in the private sector and to promote products for business purposes.
