To streamline multiple individual memberships from one agency or organization, URISA offers both a Government Agency and an Educational Institution membership, each detailed below.
Government Agency Membership
Includes a subscription to the GIS Capability Maturity Model Assessment Service!
From local township to federal agencies, URISA is your professional GIS community!
Membership categories are based on population and include a specified number of individual memberships (normally $175). Those members receive a subscription to the The GIS Professional and URISA Digest, discounts on registration for URISA professional education, training and events, ample opportunities for contributions, and much more.
Local government agencies appreciate the opportunity to take advantage of this ‘enterprise’ membership for access to GMI’s GIS Capability Maturity Assessment Service and professional membership for its GIS staff whether they are clustered in one department or are spread out across a number of departments (assessor’s office, public health, emergency management, planning, etc). Also included are a copy of URISA’s Model GIS Job Descriptions e-publication; an annual opportunity to license a URISA Certified Workshop for $750 (regularly priced at $1,000) to efficiently conduct on-site training (instructor, facility and material expenses not included); and a team discount for GIS-Pro, URISA's annual conference … one free conference registration for every 5 registrants from the organization.
- State or provincial agencies also receive four complimentary GIS-Pro conference registrations (value of approximately $2,000).
- Federal agency members can also take advantage of up to 5 complimentary GIS-Pro conference registrations and a discounted booth fee of $500 at the conference to promote its programs and services to the GIS community.
Agencies also have access to GMI’s GIS Capability Maturity Assessment Service at considerable savings. The assessment tool indicates your organization’s GIS management maturity on a wide range of geospatial capabilities.
The service was created to provide agencies with a means to evaluate and visualize the operational maturity of their GIS programs. Results of the self-assessment can be used to evaluate and prioritize next steps in improving GIS operations
and effectiveness. Clear presentation of a GIS program’s maturity levels and gaps can lead to support and resources for further growth and new uses of GIS. The CMM assessment subscription service enables GIS managers to monitor
progress annually and to compare their results to their peer group.
- Annual self-administered assessment of key metrics associated with organizational GIS management maturity levels
- Results report and graphic charting
- Visualize your organization’s GIS management strengths/weaknesses
- Comparison across other organizations

Educational Institution Membership
URISA has long valued its relationships with the academic community. In fact, most of URISA’s founding members were esteemed faculty within urban planning departments.
Outreach to future GIS professionals at community colleges and universities is one of our most important responsibilities.
An Educational Institution Membership is available to faculty and staff at colleges and universities at a single location. This option includes individual membership benefits for two faculty members and up to ten (10) students for $400 (value of $550), with additional dues for an unlimited number of student members at only $10/each.
Another perk for Educational Institution members is access to the member mailing list to promote your degree program and an online promotional presence.
