Across the board, GIS-Pro 2010 in Orlando was a positive and energizing conference. The presentations, interactive discussions, networking events and hallway conversations were all spectacular. Thanks to the conference committee under the leadership of Danielle, Geney and Claudia! And thanks to my great URISA staff (Verlanda, Pat, Katie, Jeni and Ann) for your hard work and dedication!
The first URISA Geospatial Ignite event was truly memorable and we'll definitely do that again. The presentation luncheons gave two dozen presenters the opportunity to present their research/experience to small groups of attendees which encouraged discussion and connections. The thought leaders panel (thanks Karen Stewart) was a one-of-a-kind event at the conference. Google, Microsoft, Esri, Autodesk, ERDAS, IBM and Oracle talking about trends and hot topics.
I've been going to URISA's annual conference as a staff member since 1998 and even though the numbers are still down compared to a few years ago, the feeling of community and purpose is way up... (I know that sounds a bit hokey, but I really think it's true). Everyone is committed to education, advocacy, developing and supporting the GIS profession.
A note I made on the trip back to Chicago concerned young GIS professionals. There are a number of younger (under 35) professionals in the URISA community who are fast developing into leaders in the organization, and they are bringing with them exciting ideas and perspectives.
The 'veteran' leaders in URISA are still engaged and committed. Dr. Barry Wellar continues to challenge us to excel. Peirce Eichelberger, David Moyer, Joe Ferriera, Ed Crane, Bill Huxhold. Dianne Haley, Martha Wells, Ed Wells, Pete Croswell, Hilary Perkins (all URISA Past Presidents) were involved and connected, and I'm so grateful! In fact, Hux pointed out that the conference social event was the 'best one since the 1975 conference!' Need to find out more about that event...
Large and small firms, several URISA chapters (Washington, Alberta, Quebec, Carolina, Alaska, Northern California)... came through as URISA sponsors this year, helping to support the conference financially. Esri was very generous as our Diamond Sponsor and CDM supported the awards breakfast. Data Transfer Solutions again provided photo and video support (many images to come) and went a step further this year by dazzling us as the band for the social event. Forbidden 403, you rock!!! A very memorable social event as Hux noted. Fresh Florida air, good food, good drink, friends, music and loads of fun. I hear we'll have a repeat performance in Indianapolis next year!
Thank you, Kathrine Cargo, for a great year as URISA President! Your dedication and leadership was phenomenal. I truly enjoyed our partnership over the year. Thank you.
Sandi and Cindy.... thank you thank you thank you for your commitment. I'm glad that URISA still be able to utilize your numerous volunteer talents! Greg Babinski...we can't thank you enough for your service as URISA's Treasurer. Hilary... can't believe you're not going to be on the next Board call.
I'm going to take a couple of days off, before heading back to the office.
Have a great week!
Wendy
