In my opinion, one of URISA's best programs is the Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) Awards.
It really is a BIG DEAL to be recognized (whether as an exemplary or distinguished system)!
Sure, it is a commitment to apply for an ESIG award. It takes time. You have to include a lot of detail about your system and gather user testimonials. (Those who submit say that the process is really satisfying, however. Documenting your accomplishments and successes does validate the effort you and your staff put into your work!)
The applications are reviewed by a group of your peers (some of whom are previous winners). The review process is not taken lightly.
The Review Committee recognizes exemplary and distinguished systems in two categories (enterprise and single process). Those systems are acknowledged in press releases, written up in URISA publications, online and in industry publications. They receive fancy glass awards during the Awards Breakfast at the GIS-Pro Conference and present an overview of their systems in the ESIG Showcase session.
Think about your accomplishments and consider applying for an ESIG Award this year. http://www.urisa.org/2011esigapplication
