Spatial Information Technology Standards and System Integration

Editor:  Peter Croswell, GISP
URISA President, 1997-1998

For more than 25 years in the United States and Canada, there has been a rapidly growing awareness of the need to improve the way we gather, use, and most importantly, share spatial information.

In the early 1980s, studies conducted at the federal level, and by several states, revealed the huge amount of money and time being wasted by redundant collection and use of spatial information. Breaking down the obstacles that prevent the sharing of information begins with development of standards. Standards for computer systems and data provide the glue to enable organizations to integrate systems and share information effectively.

URISA has prepared this publication to promote a greater understanding about spatial information technology standards.
