Nancy von Meyer Receives URISA’s Prestigious Horwood Award

September 4, 2007 (PARK RIDGE, IL) – Nancy von Meyer, PhD, PE, RLS, GISP, with a long and distinguished record of leadership and contributions to URISA and the GIS community, was the recent recipient of URISA’s prestigious Horwood Distinguished Service Award during the association’s 45th Annual Conference in Washington, DC. This award is URISA’s ultimate award for service and leadership to URISA and the geospatial industry.

The Horwood Distinguished Service Award is named after founding member and first URISA President, Edgar Horwood. Horwood was an early pioneer in the field of information systems for local government and admired by all for his intellectual and organizational contributions to URISA. Horwood was the Chair of the constitutional drafting committee, giving URISA the “open membership” model that has led to URISA’s inter-disciplinary organization.

Nancy von Meyer is vice president of Fairview Industries and works with counties, states and federal agencies on parcel and land records projects. Nancy as worked on land records projects from Oregon to Florida. Focusing primarily on counties and federal land agencies, finding efficient and economical ways to build, sustain and publish land records information. Nancy has worked with land records and parcel related system design, research on new technologies and development of new approaches to parcel issues for nearly 20 years. She was President of the Wisconsin land Information Association in 1994 and on the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association URISA Board of Directors (1992-1997). Nancy has been involved in numerous URISA committees and activities, including serving as Conference Chair for the 1998 Charlotte conference. She has also served on several national Academy of Sciences panels and has authored numerous articles and publications. Dr. Nancy has been influential in so many ways, at all levels.

The Horwood Award is further recognition of her contributions and stature in the community of GIS professionals and academicians.
