Exemplary Systems in GovernmentTM Awards

The EXEMPLARY SYSTEMS IN GOVERNMENT AWARDS, inaugurated in 1980 by the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, recognize extraordinary achievement by government agencies in the use of automated information systems. This achievement is defined as the effective application of computer technology that can be measured in terms of improved government services and increased benefits to citizens.

Each year, URISA members elect a President and three directors to the URISA Board. Terms are three years in duration and begin at the close of that year's annual conference. Presidential terms consist of one year as President-elect, one year as President, and one year as Immediate Past President.

Volunteers are individuals who choose to give freely of their time, energy, and talents to help other people, causes, or organizations, without expectation of compensation, financial or otherwise. The main reasons why people volunteer are to help others, to promote causes they believe in, and/or to accomplish what they consider to be worthwhile goals.

The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) is a nonprofit association of professionals using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other information technologies to solve challenges in state/provincial, regional and local government agencies and departments. URISA is considered to be the premier organization for the use and integration of spatial information technology to improve the quality of life in urban and regional environments.
