Second Annual URISA Student Paper Competition

Are you an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. student? Are you interested in a career using geographic information systems, information technology, geospatial technology, planning or community development? If yes, your writing and research should be recognized and shared with your peers. Submit a paper to the second annual student paper competition sponsored by the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA).

URISA promotes the effective and ethical use of spatial information and information technologies for the understanding and management of urban and regional systems.

URISA Exemplary Systems in Government Compendium

For many years now the annual URISA Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in the successful development and application of spatial systems and technologies around the world. With this in mind, and given that each award winner represents a best practice case study in project implementation and management, URISA is now showcasing some of the best award recipients from the years 2000-2005.

ESIG awards are handed out in two categories: Single Process Systems and Enterprise Systems.

• Single Process award winners are outstanding and working examples of applying information system technology to automate a specific SINGLE process or operation involving one department or sub-unit of an agency. The system application results in extended and/or improved government services that are more efficient and/or save money.
• Enterprise Systems are outstanding and working examples of using information systems technology in a multi-department environment as part of an integrated process. These systems exemplify effective use of technology yielding widespread improvements in the process(es) and/ or service(s) involved and/or cost savings to the organization.

Managers of the systems presented in the publication were contacted and asked if they could rework their original applications into short, sharp articles and also update readers on their latest system developments. The results are published in this publication.

In this publication, past ESIG winners are featured from Alberta, Ontario, Washington DC, Kentucky, North Carolina, Minnesota, Washington State, California, Florida, Victoria (Australia) and Nevada, plus 2005 winners from Ontario, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Maryland.

URISA's Latest Salary Survey Now Available

1998 marked the first URISA Salary Survey. In 2000 and 2003 the survey was greatly expanded making it the premier source for GIS and IT salary information. Based on the success of its predecessors and the high-level of demand for more information by URISA members, the 2006-07 Salary Survey has been further expanded and includes a much wider-range of detailed information. Additions include more job titles and questions pertaining to the increase/decrease of department size, professional certification, specific skills and soft skills, salary fluctuation, and zip codes for better geocoding.

Digital Parcel Mapping Handbook

This extensively detailed basic text on digital parcel mapping grew out of projects initiated by the New Jersey State Mapping Advisory Committee and was edited by Karen Parrish of the Great Swamp Watershed Association. Because it has basic information for professionals who work with digitized parcel data and for those just getting started, this book is a rich resource for everyone dealing with parcel data. The discussions of GIS benefits, data quality, and methods of digital parcel mapping have application wherever those government products have application.

Going Mobile: Mobile Technologies and GIS
