Crime Mapping & Analysis

Municipal police departments, county sheriff departments, and other state and federal law enforcement agencies use GIS technology as a tool to analyze crime statistics and patterns. In this workshop, we will explore how GIS technology is used in law enforcement to provide strategic, tactical, and administrative crime analysis.

Learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate how to create a base map suitable for crime mapping and analysis including key layers of data integral to crime mapping.
  • Demonstrate the ability to access a database and geocode addresses.
  • Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and Records Management Systems (RMS) and their role in providing data for crime mapping and analysis.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to create point symbol (pin) maps and area symbol (choropleth) maps for crime analysis.
  • Understand the techniques necessary to analyze police data in time and space.
  • Understand the difference and role of tactical, strategic, and administrative crime analysis.
  • Identify several core crime theories and understand how they apply to crime mapping and analysis.
