About Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad is the largest island in the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, off Venezuela's coast in the southern Caribbean. The capital, Port of Spain, is home to the Royal Botanical Gardens and the National Museum and Art Gallery, dedicated to local history and artwork. Its historic center is leafy Woodford Square, while Queen's Park Savannah is a popular recreation area and location of the boisterous annual Carnival.

To the north, undeveloped Maracas Beach is a sun-and-surf destination, the renowned Asa Wright Nature Centre offers bird-watching and the forested crags and waterfalls of the Northern Range can be accessed via trail. Charter boats depart from northwestern coves and bays for sport fishing expeditions or scuba diving around colorful coral reefs. With a Creole culture incorporating African, European, East Indian and Chinese traditions, Trinidad is also known for its distinct cuisine, plus calypso and soca music.

Conference History

The URISA Caribbean GIS Conference developed out of discussions that took place during the 1999 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, California between URISA staff and members in the Caribbean . An unmet educational need was identified, a business case was made, and the first conference took place September 9-12, 2001 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Since then, the conference has successfully taken place eight times and has come to be known as the premier geospatial event in the region.  Caribbean GIS professionals are at the forefront of technology adoption and are regularly acknowledged for outstanding accomplishments across the region.

Usually presented every two years, the conference most recently took place in Barbados.
